Merah Jambu

Hey guys, so.. a lot of you have been asking me the same question over and over again. “Nate, are you going to update your blog in the U.S?” My answer to that is: yes and no… I want to continue posting on my blog but I am still not sure if I have the time to do it. But rest assured, I will still update my Instagram (yay!) and for those of you who haven’t followed me; please follow! (Instagram: @nathjeto).

Anyways, before leaving Jakarta I’ve decided to fill up my belly with as much Indonesian food as I can…

Just recently, I went to this Indonesian restaurant/canteen called Merah Jambu located in Gedung Tempo Scan Tower. I ordered (almost) everything from their menu and had a great time.

The first dish I tried was their nasi goreng buntut (oxtail fried rice). This dish is my personal favorite and I will surely miss not having this dish in the States. I love this dish because it’s so flavorful and they give out a pretty generous amount of buntut (oxtail).

The second dish I tried was their fried duck. The mango-chilli and the duck meat goes very well together as it complements one another. For those who love mango-chili, I think this dish is definitely worth the try.

The third dish I tried was their soto betawi and soto ayam. I liked it but I still like the nasi goreng buntut better.

Furthermore, I also tried the sop buntut, nasi bogana, nasi liwet and tahu telor. All these dishes were spectacular as it tasted very rich and you can feel all the Indonesian spices giving all sorts of flavor. I loved the tahu telor, its crispy, yet you can taste the saltiness and also a bit of sweetness from the sauce.

Just like the nasi goreng buntut, the sop buntut is  also my personal favorite!IMG_2785.JPG

Lastly, I also ordered the tape goreng (fried fermented cassava). This is the perfect dish to close and it shouldn’t  be missed.

Overall, I had a good experience dining here at Merah Jambu. FYI, this restaurant/canteen also does delivery and catering services. You can contact them via their Instagram (@merahjambucanteen) or by calling/emailing them at: +628164248100 /

Tugu Kunskring Paleis

A few weeks ago my friends and I decided to go for a food hunting day and we have picked Tugu Kunskring Paleis for our venture. This place is pretty much historical and there were a bunch of world class painting masterpieces displayed. I was so excited to go here because I wanted to see one of Pablo Picasso’s pieces and unfortunately while I was there, they kept it away in storage. I was very disappointed however there were still a bunch of other art pieces and the place itself is already very interesting.

There we decided to try some of the dishes and one of the highlights was trying the Ayam Setan (Devil Chicken). It was spicy and the flavors were very bold. I liked how the chicken was made tender and you can smell some Inonesian spices.

We also had the bitter balen. This dish I guess is pretty much inspired by the Dutch and I like how its crispy in the outside and soft in the inside.

We also had the fish and it tasted pretty decent and again, there we could taste a lot of the Indonesian spices.20140709-143802-52682372.jpg

This is the room where we dined and it was pretty massive for only the three of us eating there. We were also told that a few days before we were here, Victoria Beckham had dinner here and also the Sukarno family. The Sukarno family even had a VIP room named after them in this restaurant!

In this restaurant they also have a gift shop and they sell a bunch of nice antiques. Oh and a tip for you guys if you want to come. You can ask the person there to give you a tour of the place! 🙂

Bebek Tepi Sawah

A week ago I was invited to Bebek Tepi Sawah for the opening of its fourth outlet in Pondok Indah Mall. Once again, thank you Bebek Tepi Sawah for inviting me. I had a great time and I have said this many times…. LOVE THE BEBEK! The Bebek is awesome! Anyhow, they introduced us to a new dessert which was the Coconut Pudding. It was pretty tasty and so if you guys happen to be around be sure to check that out. Same old; same old, I’ve said this many times at my previous articles the ambience of this place is very modern yet traditional. You can feel the Indonesian vibe going on and if you haven’t known Bebek Tepi Sawah, it is located near the XXI theatre. So probably once you Jakartans head out for a movie you might as well stop by Bebek Tepi Sawah and eat here first?

I think this article should cover the whole thing already! You can read my previous articles on Bebek Tepi Sawah below and how I have already described the food and how it tastes like. Thanks again Bebek Tepi Sawah and to the Tani Group for inviting me to dinner and congratulations on the opening once again!

Bebek Tepi Sawah

Good news everyone! Bebek Tepi Sawah has just opened its third branch in Cilandak Town Square.

As you all may know you’ve seen my previous post about the restaurant in Living World, but here’s a snippet of what happened during the grand opening.

First and foremost I want to thank Bebek Tepi Sawah for inviting me to the grand opening and the food was spectacular. Had a full table of fried ducks and the side dishes served as a buffet. It was a unique Ubud-Bali experience and I was beyond happy to attend that evening.

20140508-200736.jpgThis is a  picture of my friend and I posing in front of the restaurant. 20140508-200743.jpg

20140508-200749.jpgDuring the grand opening the restaurant was overflowed with people and they had a press conference. The owners talked in front and they were talking about quality food and how Bebek Tepi Sawah is indeed quality food and is very tasty. Moreover, they also talked about their vision and how their restaurant came to be and the owners from Bali also came to talk about the franchise.

The food served in the buffet was of course very unique and you can feel the Indonesian vibe going on. They had a little performance by the band and it entertained the guest. The food and fried ducks in general were crispy and the meat was juicy and the rice was sort of different than the usual. They served nasi bakar. It was rich in spices and they had assorted sauces and it was rich in flavor.

Once again, I’d like to thank Bebek Tepi Sawah for inviting me and congrats on the opening! Hope the restaurant will always be flooded with tons of people eating those glorious bebek! 🙂

Food in PIK

Pantai Indah Kapuk or PIK for short is filled with restaurants along the stretch of small buildings. I’ve visited a bunch of places but two of my favorite places there are Bihun Bebek A-eng and Hong Tang.

When you’re around PIK don’t forget to make a few stops at my favorite places..

This is my favorite. You should definitely stop here to eat some “bihun bebek!” Bihun Bebek is a meal consisting of glass noodles and duck. This is so yummy and this won’t disappoint. If you want to order the side dishes you have to try their fish balls and pork belly. Trust me, if you think pork belly is disgusting you might change your mind after eating it here. I was once of that opinion too.

Location: Pantai Indah Kapuk (Along the stretch of buildings -Ruko)

If you have a sweet tooth try Hong Tang. Place is super crowded and it may take you a while to get seats. The service here is also lacking (maybe its because its too crowded and they have a lot of new trainees). Other than that the green tea ice cream with jelly tastes excellent and super sweet! Although some of you may think the place is too overrated because its “mainstream,” honestly I’d say its pretty nice and yummy!

Holy Crab

HOLY CRAB. Okay, this restaurant has got to be my current favorite. The seafood, especially the crab here tastes amazing! Its pretty much similar to the one they have in the States only they have made it to suit more of the Indonesian palette or in other words suited to what Jakartans would like. The sauce tasted very crisp and flavoursome. However price wise, it’s a bit expensive. Afterall, my experience eating here was worth it and it’s definitely a place where I would go back and eat here again (Highly recommended). Enough talking, let the pictures speak for itself…. *drum rolls*

Oh, and one more thing! They don’t serve the food on regular plates and you have to eat with your bare hands…

Ismaya Catering Co

20140228-230127.jpgIsmaya Catering Co offers a wide range of food from different countries: Indonesian, Mexican, American, Italian, you name it! I was fortunate enough to come and taste their new menu on February 26th. The food was amazing and going there was totally worth my time. Getting invited to eat at dinner with other food bloggers was a new experience for me and I had a lot of fun. If you’re thinking I’m just writing a good review for them because they gave me free food you are wrong. It was a superb dinner and it tasted great.

As starters we were served lychee refreshers to soothe our dry throats. Honestly, it tasted sweet and refreshing. Just the way I like it. Moving on to food, we were served Nachos with Beef Chili Con Carne (45k) and Mexican Cheese Quesadilla (48k). The Quesidilas was enjoyable however the Nachos were rather too sweet for me. Even so, the guacamole sauce and everything was blended together and everything in the dish provides unity and tasted amazing.

After that we moved on to try their main course, Nasi Goreng Kecombrang (45k), Soto Tangkar with Jasmine Rice (45k) and Double Trouble Spaghetti (65k). Even though it does not go well altogether, it was nice having different choices of food on the dinner table. You get to experience different food from different countries. The Nasi Goreng tasted wonderful. Eventhough it looks plain the flavor was tangy, nice and it was a unique mix flavors indeed. The Soto Tangkar tasted really nice. Kinda like the Soto Gebrak kuningan which I really like. I will be doing another review on this soon. It was full of flavors and I can taste the spices. And the Spaghetti was ultimately the best. Maybe, I just love pork skin, it was super crunchy and pork and pasta are both good combinations.

20140228-230051.jpgFor deserts we had Molten Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream (40k) and Singkong Belanda (32k). The Molten Lava Cake was nice, moist and when you cut it you can see the chocolate bursting out.  The Singkong was fried evenly and you can feel the crisp all through out. The caramel sauce on top also complements it well. Last but not least we also tried more refreshers and I think the watermelon is worth the try. Its super refreshing and even though I was super full I get to take more sips. All in all, thanks again to ISMAYA for inviting me to the dinner experience. It was great and I hope I can review more food from these restaurant branches.
