Merah Jambu

Hey guys, so.. a lot of you have been asking me the same question over and over again. “Nate, are you going to update your blog in the U.S?” My answer to that is: yes and no… I want to continue posting on my blog but I am still not sure if I have the time to do it. But rest assured, I will still update my Instagram (yay!) and for those of you who haven’t followed me; please follow! (Instagram: @nathjeto).

Anyways, before leaving Jakarta I’ve decided to fill up my belly with as much Indonesian food as I can…

Just recently, I went to this Indonesian restaurant/canteen called Merah Jambu located in Gedung Tempo Scan Tower. I ordered (almost) everything from their menu and had a great time.

The first dish I tried was their nasi goreng buntut (oxtail fried rice). This dish is my personal favorite and I will surely miss not having this dish in the States. I love this dish because it’s so flavorful and they give out a pretty generous amount of buntut (oxtail).

The second dish I tried was their fried duck. The mango-chilli and the duck meat goes very well together as it complements one another. For those who love mango-chili, I think this dish is definitely worth the try.

The third dish I tried was their soto betawi and soto ayam. I liked it but I still like the nasi goreng buntut better.

Furthermore, I also tried the sop buntut, nasi bogana, nasi liwet and tahu telor. All these dishes were spectacular as it tasted very rich and you can feel all the Indonesian spices giving all sorts of flavor. I loved the tahu telor, its crispy, yet you can taste the saltiness and also a bit of sweetness from the sauce.

Just like the nasi goreng buntut, the sop buntut is  also my personal favorite!IMG_2785.JPG

Lastly, I also ordered the tape goreng (fried fermented cassava). This is the perfect dish to close and it shouldn’t  be missed.

Overall, I had a good experience dining here at Merah Jambu. FYI, this restaurant/canteen also does delivery and catering services. You can contact them via their Instagram (@merahjambucanteen) or by calling/emailing them at: +628164248100 /

BCA Indonesia Open 2016

A few weeks ago I was invited by BCA to Hong Kong Cafe in Sarinah to have to the opportunity to gather with fellow bloggers to discuss about an event called Badminton Indonesia Open.

Screen Shot 2016-06-17 at 9.25.51 pm.png

A group of people attended the gathering and I was fortunate enough to have met leaders of PBSI (Persatuan Bulutangkis Seluruh Indonesia) and also professional Badminton players. For those of you who have no idea what PBSI is, its basically a club or kinda like a group of people sharing the same interest of playing badminton professionally.

During the gathering I was given valuable knowledge about badminton and BCA’s role in the event. Badminton Open Indonesia is BCA’s biggest CSR and they are the main sponsor for the event. One of the professional Badminton athlete, Fran Kurniawan Teng shared about his passion in badminton and his rigorous training everyday. He spends most of his time training and shared to us about his previous wins and also challenges along the way on how he hopes to win for Indonesia in the future. The leaders of PP PBSI, Corporate Secretary of BCA Ibu Inge Setiawati and Head of Public Relations and Social Media PP PBSI Ibu Yuni Kartika, were also very optimistic that Indonesia will win in the near future.

A week after the gathering, I attended Badminton Open Indonesia on Friday the 3rd at Istora Senayan. As I watch the match between Indonesia and Denmark I could feel the thrill and excitement. Although the Indonesian team lost, Indonesia still gets another chance next year if they are still optimistic on winning! I was watching from the the press area and even though I’m not a big fan of badminton nor any sports, infact, I was literally taken away by the spirit of the audience cheering for team Indonesia and just the thrill of watching the players play. This was a first time experience for me watching live sports in Indonesia.

Anyways, here’s a glimpse of history about Indonesia open events. This year, 2016, marks the third year for BCA to host the event alongside with Djarum. Indonesia has previously won a lot of awards in Badminton thanks to players Ardy Wiranata, Taufik Hidayat, etc. And in addition, Indonesia has won many tournaments before in the years 1983, 1996, 1997 and 2001.

All in all, the Badminton event held at Istora Senayan was a blast to attend to because of the thrill, and this should be a fun event if you were to come with friends or family. There were also a lot of food vendors in the area, and I was happy to have come to support for team Indonesia.

Are you looking for your dream house or dream car? If so, this article will explain you the things you need to know before purchasing either a car or a house using the benefits of BCA.

Last weekend, BCA together with Sinarmas Land have created the BCA expo and auto show with a purpose to help their clients fulfill their everyday needs to own either a house or a car. I went to the event to find out more.

When I arrived at the event, the exhibition is already filled with many people. They came to take a look of the new variant of  premium cars and the promotion that offered by BCA. There were many new variants that offered on the event such as All New Toyota Sienta, the new generation of family SUV from Hyundai called All New Hyundai Tucson and the most awaited new variant of BMW that is All New BMW X1.

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 11.47.17 pm.png

Aside from the car’s exhibition inside the hall, the visitors could register themselves to test drive their dream cars. Visitors could choose to either drive themselves or stay seated in the passenger seat and enjoy the luxurious features each cars have to offer.

The event was opened by the board of BCA’s directors Armand W. Hartono and Henry Koenafi as well as the director of Sinarmas land, Michael J. Purwanto. This event specially invites BCA Solitare clients and BCA Prioritas.

Honestly, I was pretty intrigued with the deals they had to offer. As I passed by the cars in the expo, they all look very cool and of course very appealing. But in this case, it wasn’t the car’s aesthetic that tempt me to buy one, but it was more to BCA’s offer that I did not want to miss. With interest rate as low as 3.45% and some cars with 0% interest rate I’m sure no one would want to miss this opportunity to buy a car with really low rates. This deal (BCA’s KKB- Kredit Kendaraan Bermotor) would be the best one I’ve seen so far. I was even tempted to buy a car for myself but I do not think I will be needing one since I am leaving Indonesia soon to study abroad. However, for fellow friends and Indonesians, this should be the time for you to buy a car! And FYI, most banks would usually give rates as low as 3.9% only. In addition, BCA also offers additional deals (the best tinted glasses for your car – VCOOL, free iPads, BCA Flazz cards). You may also choose your dream car from many participating brands (Toyota, Honda, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Mercedes, Mazda, Mitsubishi, VW, Hyundai, BMW, Nissan, Audi, Lexus, Mini, JLR, Porsche, Maseratti, and MClaren).

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 11.47.40 pm.png

Not only that, I also found out more about BCA’s KPR program. Buying your dream house has never been easier and affordable. BCA is offering a fixed interest rate of 7.99% in the first three years, and 8.99% in the following three years after. This rate usually applies to a minimal of 8 year period of time. In my experience hearing from my parents, this deal is simply amazing. Usually banks would give interest rates at 10% and above, and this still shocks me. BCA is offering deals you definitely do not want to miss.

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 11.47.47 pm

While I was there I also enjoyed a cup of nitrogen ice cream from Ron’s Laboratory which I easily purchased using BCA Sakuku for 50% off. I have written about how easy to use BCA Sakuku in a previous article (Click here to find out more!).

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 11.47.57 pm

All in all, the BCA expo and auto show was clearly a fun event to attend as I also got to test drive a few cars myself! Being a young adult myself I was experiencing and trying out different cars that I could potentially buy for myself in the near future.

Total Care

Hey guys I haven’t been talking much about food and restaurants but this post is a bit related to food (in a way).

A while ago, I stumbled upon this relatively new mouthwash called Total Care and I really want to share about this interesting find. Over the years I have been hiding my bad breath by chewing gum, but apparently chewing gum all the time gets super tiring… so when I found Total Care I was surprised that my mouth odor immediately disappears! Total Care makes my teeth feel clean and gives a fresh sensation that lasts for a long period of time. I feel very confident to put a smile on my face now that my breath smells good and gak minder kalau ketemu temen-temen setelah pakai mouthwash ini.

I also found out that the purple mouthwash from Total Care whitens your teeth! How cool is that? Ini feature yang sangat interesting as most mouthwash out there cuman freshens your breath and bukan whiten your teeth. I have been using the mouthwash for a few days now and emang it works sedikit-sedikit. Give it a try guys! I can see a bit of improvement from myself and I can clearly see all the yellow plaques from my teeth slowly fading away.

Another feature I love about Total Care Mouthwash is that it doesn’t contain any alcohol and is proven to be safe by the Halal MUI certificate. I researched online that most mouthwashes that contain alcohol usually hurts your gums and teeth as it makes your teeth feel “ngilu.” However, this mouthwash does not make your gums feel “ngilu,” and I am very happy after using Total Care. I feel super comfortable and will always have this fresh sensation everytime I use it.

This product also comes in four colors and each of them has its own speciality. It also comes in two different sizes. The small one comes in handy for traveling.

  • Blue (Cool mint)
  • Orange (Lemon Blast)
  • Green (Sensitive Teeth)
  • Purple (Sparkling White)

Processed with VSCOcam with kk1 preset

Lastly, in December (2 Dec-31 Dec), Total Care is currently introducing a smile challenge competition. It is so easy and all you gotta do is upload a pict. of yourself smiling with the hashtage #SenyumTotalCare !! Gampang banget cuman upload foto kamu senyum terpedemu dan dapatkan hadiah keren.

Quipper: A Fun E-Learning Solution!

On November 14 2015, Quipper Video launched its newest product in Grand Indonesia by inviting a number of media bloggers for a press conference.

Quipper Video is a one-stop solution to learn in the digital age we live in today. Most twelfth graders or SMA 3 students in Indonesia have to go through what we know as Ujian Nasional (UN) or Seleksi Bersama Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Negeri (SBMPTN). For those of you who don’t know it and are International readers, these testings are a requirement from the government in Indonesia and it is something like the SATs for Indonesians. This online product makes videos to help students especially in the twelfth grade to learn about topics such as mathematics, sciences and languages.

Quipper understands what most twelfth graders have to go through everyday in their lives – waking up early in the morning to go to school and arrive home really late at night. They understand that teens rarely get the chance to see the sunlight because of the long and tiring day of school. Teens in Jakarta especially get home really late due to factors such as traffic and may find that going for offline tuition with tutors a hassle. So they have built this website and publish videos for students to learn from. Not only that, but they have more than 4000 quality questions for students to learn from and quiz themselves.

I can totally relate to this situation because I am currently in the twelfth grade and I get super lazy to go to an actual offline or physical place to get lessons on UN exams after finishing 8 hours of school. I would rather have it in my phone or laptop and I can access it whenever I want. I also feel that its easier to use Quipper because I can repeat the videos again and again. I can review anytime I want and everything is up to me. I can save more time by having it on my personal gadget and still learn. I think Quipper is a nice learning tool because it will teach students like me about independent learning by motivating to learn ourselves. This skill will be useful for university later and throughout our lives. After we finish high school I don’t think our parents would still push us to study and it is up to us to study or not.

In addition, Quipper would also be beneficial for students like me because it will help me familiarize with what the UN examinations are like. I go to an International school and my school have never required us to do these examinations. However, just recently the government changed the rules and have made it mandatory for us to take the UN examinations. With the help of Quipper, I can help prepare for my upcoming UN examinations and get the big idea. I can start learning with the topics I want to learn first and as a very individualized learner I like to learn things through listening as well as visually.

Learning has never been easier as it can be done anywhere as long as you have a laptop and  good internet connection with you. Their learning tools are also categorized in more granular topics so it is easier for students to follow along. Students can rewind and play back the videos if they want to repeat the lessons. This suits my learning style because I like to go back and review things in detail again an again. Where in real life if you actually go to an actual place for lessons, it would be really hard because asking the teacher to explain it again and again would make them unhappy and myself feel bad.

Finally, Quipper is also designed to motivate students in learning, and parents have access and may monitor students learning activities through a report.

Tugu Kunskring Paleis

A few weeks ago my friends and I decided to go for a food hunting day and we have picked Tugu Kunskring Paleis for our venture. This place is pretty much historical and there were a bunch of world class painting masterpieces displayed. I was so excited to go here because I wanted to see one of Pablo Picasso’s pieces and unfortunately while I was there, they kept it away in storage. I was very disappointed however there were still a bunch of other art pieces and the place itself is already very interesting.

There we decided to try some of the dishes and one of the highlights was trying the Ayam Setan (Devil Chicken). It was spicy and the flavors were very bold. I liked how the chicken was made tender and you can smell some Inonesian spices.

We also had the bitter balen. This dish I guess is pretty much inspired by the Dutch and I like how its crispy in the outside and soft in the inside.

We also had the fish and it tasted pretty decent and again, there we could taste a lot of the Indonesian spices.20140709-143802-52682372.jpg

This is the room where we dined and it was pretty massive for only the three of us eating there. We were also told that a few days before we were here, Victoria Beckham had dinner here and also the Sukarno family. The Sukarno family even had a VIP room named after them in this restaurant!

In this restaurant they also have a gift shop and they sell a bunch of nice antiques. Oh and a tip for you guys if you want to come. You can ask the person there to give you a tour of the place! 🙂

San Jung

A new Korean restaurant has just opened in Taman Sari Lippo Karawaci. I feel that this has got to be it and so I went there to try the newly opened restaurant. Surprisingly, it tasted really good and I love their BBQ duck. It tastes like ham and it pretty much looks like ham. If you’re looking for a restaurant to eat at or have no where to go and bored of Jakarta surroundings, this should be a good place to have your meal at. They also have promotional discounts at certain times. If I am not mistaken they have 15% off from 1 to 4 PM and they hand out free Rp. 50,000 vouchers on weekdays.
